'Basement'

The photographs in ‘Basement series’ constitute parts of the processes involved in projects that I have been working on in my basement studio over the past few years.

In my attempt to achieve specific outcomes, in particular the growth of bioluminescent algae, I became frustrated with consecutive failures. I looked around and realized I was missing much of the work. The failed attempts, the detritus, the dead bees, the tissue found crumpled inside the pocket of her jacket that I wore all the time in the Antarctic; were as much a part of my work as the proposed end result.

By photographing them in a formal still life, it gives the objects a presence that would otherwise be overlooked.
